? What is ACTIV’ AIR?

ACTIV’ Air is plasterboard with an innovative technology that improves indoor air quality by permanently removing Formaldehyde and other pollutants circulating indoors

? How does Activ’ Air work?

VOC's come in contact with the board through typical air flow
VOC's chemically react with a special additive contained in the plasterboard
Once they are captured in the board, VOC's are converted into inert compounds and are not released back into the air.

* It cannot be tested outside the Lab and in India, we do not have any demonstration tool to prove its performance.

? What is inert compound?

Inert means it doesn't react chemically with any other materials, and is safe for humans and animals.

? What is the special additive present in the plasterboard?

The special additive is a patented additive of Saint-Gobain Gyproc, which is certified by ISO-16000 for its performance (reduction of Formaldehyde from the air). It is safe for human health as per the various tests conducted in the Gyproc laboratories.

? How much will Activ’ Air reduce aldehyde concentration in a given room?

In a test environment Activ'Air reduces aldehyde concentration by 70%. Tests were conducted by the the EUROFINS laboratory group in Denmark certifying Activ' Air's effectiveness.

? What are the finishing details of Activ’ Air?

Paint: Breathable Water-based acrylic paints, primers and breathable wall paper can be used on Activ’ Air.

Cutting and finishing: cutting of board like any other board does not affect its performance in any aspect.

Note: Non-water based or oil based paints are strictly prohibited for Activ’ Air board because it reduces its performance in terms of absorbing formaldehyde and other pollutants.

? Which are the application areas of Activ’ Air?

Activ'Air is ideal for buildings with stringent indoor air quality requirements.

? Are there any special installation requirements?

Activ'Air is lightweight, easy to cut and install and does not require special tools. It is handled and installed like all other Gyproc boards.

? Is it available with any other speciality?

Right now it is available in its original form with no other special property. Soon we will introduce it will other properties such as fireline, moisture resistant, etc.

? How Activ’ Air board can be identified?

Activ’ Air can be identified by its logo and the edge tape.

? Does it eliminate air odors?

Activ'Air can help to eliminate bad odors, but is not the absolute answer. A concentration of a given substance may be so high that you will experience odor nuisance before it impacts your health and vice versa.

? Should a building have ventilation if Activ’ Air is used?

Yes, it is always necessary to ventilate. Activ'Air cleans the air inside your home, but a fan base remains essential.

? How long will Activ’ Air last?

Simulation conducted by the Saint-Gobain R&D department estimates that the process is active for at least 75 years (source: R&D Saint-Gobain)

? What are the symptoms related to poor indoor air quality?

Poor IAQ has been linked to headaches, fatigue and concentration problems.
Indoor pollution is also believed to aggravate and cause allergies and asthma
Formaldehyde and other indoor pollutants are known carcinogens

? What is Indoor Air?

Indoor air is the air inside the buildings in which the occupants live and breathe.

? Why is indoor air quality important?

There is a rapidly growing awareness regarding indoor air quality and its impact on health and productivity. People spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors; therefore it is important to manage indoor air quality by improving occupants and potential contaminant sources such as furnishings and outdoor pollutants.

? What harmful substances are present in the indoor air?

Most pollutants present in indoor air may constitute nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons & dust. The study FLIES (Flanders Indoor Exposure Survey) (2007/MIM/R/024) showed that aldehydes concentration is the highest.

? What is VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)?

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are hydrocarbon compounds that evaporate easily. With some of them, harmful effects on health have been demonstrated. 3 out of 4 VOCs contained in indoor air are aldehydes.

? What are aldehydes?

Aldehydes are often contained in glues and resins used in industrial processes to manufacture all types of materials. They are present in perfume, lacquers, paints and some building materials. They are also found in cigarette smoke.

? What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is the most harmful aldehyde. It is contained in glues and resins used in the production of chipboard, wood panels, flooring and pre-pasted wallpaper. Smoking also causes the emission of relatively high concentrations of formaldehyde. It is also found in varnishes for wooden flooring, paints, cosmetics (shampoos, deodorants,) and textiles (curtains). Formaldehyde can cause health problems.
High concentrations of formaldehyde in the air can irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory system. This results in watery eyes, runny nose, dry throat and cough. In some cases, it can cause mild or moderate inflammation of the mucosa of the eyes (conjunctivitis). According to some, formaldehydes are carcinogenic. IARC (2004) classifies formaldehyde as a Group [1 Carcinogenic to humans. Carcinogens are responsible for cancer.

? What is the remedy for this?

? How much percentage of formaldehyde can ActivAir boards absorb?

ActivAir^® boards can absorb up to 70% formaldehyde.

? Where can ActivAir^® boards be used?

ActivAir^® boards can be used for Walls and ceilings. When used for walls, it is advisable to use these boards in the outer layer of the partition wall. It can be used for dry areas in interiors of – Offices, Hospitals, Hotels, Educational buildings, Residential, Industrial, Retail and Entertainment applications.

? Which paints can be used along with ActivAir^® boards?

Breathable paints that allow formaldehyde in air to pass through them and reach the board surface can be used on ActivAir^® boards. Any water based paints can be used.
