Plastering FAQs

What is the cost of one coat plaster compared to sand plaster + pop application

The cost of one coat plaster is almost the same as sand cement plaster + pop application, however product being freight sensitive the equation may change if the material is being dispatched to far-off locations.

How does Gyproc Plasters behave in moisture?

When a roof or the external plaster leaks or water pipe break, the wetting of the plaster has no harmful effect, if the plaster area affected can dry out rapidly. Repeated wetting will keep the surface damp, till the plastering area is dried out.

To avoid moisture seepage from the ground, apply Gyproc Plasters on walls to 4” to 6” above the skirting level. Do not apply Gyproc Plasters on the surfaces when they are exposed to weather. Water flow does not affect the Plaster strength, but it may cause the Gypsum plaster to create stains.

What is the recommended thickness for the application of Gyproc Plasters?

Gyproc Plasters can be applied approximately 6mm to 25 mm in thickness measured from the face of the backing. Gyproc Plasters for higher thickness should be applied in two or more layers (15mm each) without any time interval.

Upon what bases may Gyproc Plasters be applied?

Gyproc Plasters can be applied directly to brick walls, concrete blocks, or RCC surfaces. The RCC surfaces should be hacked or use of a Bonding agent is recommended. The surfaces should not have paint, oil, dust, dirt or any other material that might prevent the development of proper bond.

What is Gyproc One Coat Plasters

Gyproc One Coat Plaster is a brand name of Gypsum Range of Products manufactured by Saint Gobain India Pvt. Ltd.

It is manufactured by heating the prepared raw gypsum. Heating the raw gypsum forces a chemical reaction in the gypsum to change it from dihydrate, CaSO4. 2H2O, to hemi-hydrate, CaSO4.½H2O, by driving off 1½ of the molecules of water, known as the ‘water of crystallization’. Certain additives are added to CaSO4.½H2O to reduce its Bulk Density, delay the setting time, to arrest the shrinkage cracks & to improve the bonding strength, durability, Insulation value, fire resistance.

What is the difference between hacking and Gyproc Bond-It?

Hacking is the process of roughening the RCC surface to hold the plaster. Since hacking is done manually, it is not consistent, which means there is the risk of plaster debonding.

Gyproc BOND it is a ready-to-apply liquid chemical, containing coarse aggregates that give the mechanical key and chemical bonding to plaster, thereby eliminating the risk of de-bonding.

Surface preparation through BOND it as a bonding agent

Gyproc Elite 90 as a single coat levelling plaster

Gyproc Champion Putty as a smoothing putty to make the surface paint-ready

What is the difference between conventional internal finishing and the Gyproc method of finishing?

Conventional methods of finishing employ sand cement plastering and POP punning to level the surface , followed by the smoothing and painting. This method involves a lot of steps and is messy and time-consuming.

The Gyproc system involves a simple three-step process:

Surface preparation through BOND it as a bonding agent

Gyproc Elite 90 as a single coat levelling plaster

Gyproc Champion Putty as a smoothing putty to make the surface paint-ready

How is Gyproc champion putty better than other putties?

Gyproc Champion Putty is a single product solution for smoothing all surfaces. It offers numerous advantages compared to the competition. These include:

It's easy to apply

Easy sanding process

Does not require primer

No hand burns

Quick drying time

Max thickness of 4mm possible

Requires only 2 coats for optimum thickness

Applicable on all surfaces

What is the difference between Gyproc plaster and POP(Stucco)?

Plaster of Paris (POP) is a hemihydrate calcium sulphate with no additives in it, which means that setting time is unregulated, resulting in a lot of wastage and also formation of cracks.

Gyproc plasters contain specially formulated additives to take care of high background suction. So, they are used for application on high, moderate or low suction backgrounds like red bricks, concrete blocks, AAC blocks and RCC. The special additives ensure high spread (coverage) and increased setting time which reduces wastage and eliminates shrinkage cracks.

Why should one opt for Gypsum plaster instead of conventional sand cement plastering?

Sand cement plastering is a time-consuming and messy affair. You need to procure different raw materials like sand, cement, water and aggregates separately and then mix them on site. Sand cement plastering also requires water curing for at least seven days, which makes the process extremely labour-intensive and time-consuming. What’s more, using fine river sand is not eco-friendly as it involves dredging rivers which causes harm to the environment.

So, gypsum plaster is fast becoming the preferred option to plaster internal ceilings and walls. It is ready to use, requires no water curing and is labour-friendly and faster than sand cement plastering. It also delivers a crack-free and smooth finish.
